The Institute for Economic Empowerment conducts research, demonstration, and development projects to make significant progress toward the strategic goal of full and fair employment for individuals with severe disabilities, particularly those facing the most significant disability-related barriers to employment.
The Institute was founded by NISH, a nonprofit agency that develops and maintains employment and training opportunities for people with severe disabilities through the AbilityOne Program (formerly known as the Javits-Wagner-O'Day Program). The AbilityOne Program is a program that leverages the buying power of the United States government to generate jobs for people with severe disabilities. Using AbilityOne, Federal agencies buy products and services from nonprofit agencies employing people with severe disabilities. For more information about NISH, visit http://www.nish.org. For more information about the AbilityOne Program, visit http://www.abilityone.gov. The Institute's research is intended to expand and improve employment opportunities for people with disabilities both within and beyond the AbilityOne Program. See the links provided below for more information about the Institute. Information about the Institute's research projects can be found under Institute Research. The Institute is also developing a Quality Work Environment (QWE) Clearinghouse, which will include management practices and assistive technology associated with a Quality Work Environment for people with significant disabilities. |
