The NISH Institute for Economic Empowerment recently sponsored an Asset Development Summit in San Francisco, CA on September 25, 2012. As part of its Real Economic Impact (REI) Tour, the National Disability Institute (NDI) presented a day of activities devoted to developing opportunities for collaboration and leveraging resources to build more inclusive financial literacy services for people with disabilities.
Representatives from the disability, financial services, government and asset development communities were in attendance. The Asset Development Summit included discussions on public benefit programs, financial education and asset development opportunities for persons with disabilities. Attendees identified ways to increase the use of available programs by individuals with disabilities and created an action plan for the community. Heightened efforts at collaboration among organizations and across sectors was a central message of the event.
A follow-up event will be scheduled in the coming months to expand on the conversation that began in San Francisco and provide practical training for those involved in the disability and asset development communities.
